Needlepoint, cross-stitch, and embroidery are often confused. Here is a clear, side-by-side comparison of the canvas, stitches, needles, and finished look, so you know which is which.

There are many ways to calculate the the amount of thread you need but really one tried and true method that tends to be used over and over. 

Once you have your canvas picked out you are going to take a tape measure and measure the design area of the canvas. If you are shopping online, look for the "design area" dimensions in the product description. *Trigger warning, the following steps do require basic math. 

For example: This canvas is a 9.25 in x 7.25 in canvas. So 9 x 7 = 67.06 square inches. NOW, each thread will tell you how much area it covers per skein. For this example, I am using Silk & Ivory and it is estimated to cover 28 square inches. So I will need at least 3 skeins for the background.

2. Thread
Your thread is what brings the canvas to life.

There are many different types of needlepoint thread, but as a beginner, don’t overcomplicate it. Start with:

• Cotton or wool thread

• Pre-selected thread kits (these make things very easy)

If you’re purchasing a canvas, many shops (including mine) can help guide you on exactly what thread you’ll need.

3. A Needle
You’ll need a blunt-tipped tapestry needle designed specifically for needlepoint.

These needles have:

• A larger eye (for thicker thread)

• A rounded tip (so you don’t split the canvas threads)

Most beginners will use a size 18 or 20 needle, depending on the mesh of the canvas.

4. Scissors
A small, sharp pair of scissors is essential for trimming thread neatly.

You don’t need anything fancy—just something that’s easy to keep nearby while you stitch.
