What Supplies Do You Need for Needlepoint? A Simple Beginner Guide

If you're just getting started with needlepoint, one of the first questions you'll probably ask is: What do I actually need?

The good news is that you don't need a long list of complicated tools or supplies to start needlepointing. You really only need four things: a canvas, thread, a needle, and a pair of scissors.

Let's walk through each one, plus a few of my favorite extras that aren't necessary but definitely make stitching a little more enjoyable.

The Essential Needlepoint Supplies

1. Needlepoint Canvas

Your needlepoint canvas is the foundation of your project. With a hand-painted needlepoint canvas, the design is painted directly onto the canvas and you'll stitch right over it.

If you're a beginner, I recommend starting with a 13 mesh needlepoint canvas. The holes are larger than an 18 mesh canvas, which can make it a little easier to see where your needle needs to go and get comfortable stitching.

I also recommend choosing a relatively simple design for your first project—but most importantly, pick something you actually love. You're going to spend quite a few hours with it!

2. Needlepoint Thread

Thread is where your canvas really starts to come to life.

There are tons of needlepoint threads and fibers to choose from, including wool, cotton, silk, metallics, and specialty fibers. Don't let the thread wall intimidate you, though. You absolutely don't need to understand every type of fiber before you start stitching.

For your first project, I would keep things relatively simple and choose a thread that's appropriate for the mesh size of your canvas.

3. Needlepoint Needle

For needlepoint, you'll use a tapestry needle, which is a little different from the sewing needles you may already have at home.

Tapestry needles have a larger eye to accommodate thicker needlepoint thread and a blunt, rounded tip that passes through the holes of the canvas rather than piercing the canvas threads.

The needle size you'll need depends on your canvas mesh.

4. Embroidery Scissors

Finally, you'll need a good pair of embroidery scissors for cutting your thread.

Embroidery scissors have small, sharp blades with a fine tip, which makes it easy to get close to the back of your canvas when trimming thread.

You certainly don't need a fancy pair to get started...but beautiful embroidery scissors are one of those little stitching luxuries that I personally love.

Nice-to-Have Needlepoint Accessories

Once you've covered the four essentials, there are a few needlepoint accessories that can make stitching easier and more enjoyable.

Needle Minder

A needle minder is a small magnetic accessory that attaches to your canvas and gives you somewhere to put your needle when you're not stitching.

Is it absolutely necessary? No.

Will you wonder what you ever did without one once you have one? Probably.

Project Bag

A project bag keeps your canvas, thread, scissors, and other supplies together—especially helpful if you like taking your needlepoint with you.

Good Lighting

This one isn't particularly exciting, but it makes such a difference. Stitch somewhere with plenty of natural light or use a good lamp so you can clearly see your canvas intersections and thread colors.

How to Choose the Right Needlepoint Supplies

If all of this still feels like a lot, keep it simple.

For your first needlepoint project, you really just need:

A canvas you love + the right thread + a tapestry needle + embroidery scissors.

Everything else can come later.

Your local needlepoint shop is also an incredible resource. Bring your canvas in and they can help you choose thread colors, determine which fibers work well with your mesh size, and make sure you have enough thread to finish your project.
